Self-administering a subcutaneous injection may feel intimidating at first, but with the right preparation and technique, it is simple and safe. This step-by-step guide walks you through everything you need.
Supplies You'll Need

Prepare
- •Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water.
- •Gather all supplies on a clean, flat surface.
- •Check medication label and expiration date.
- •Clean the vial top with an alcohol pad if applicable.
- •Draw the prescribed dose and remove any air bubbles.

Choose Injection Site
- •Abdomen: At least 2 inches away from the belly button.
- •Outer thigh: The upper outer area, between hip and knee.
- •Back of upper arm: Only if someone else is assisting you.
- •Important: Rotate injection sites each time.
- •Clean the chosen area with an alcohol prep pad and let it dry.

Administer Injection
- •Gently pinch the cleaned skin to create a small fold.
- •Insert the needle quickly at a 45 to 90-degree angle.
- •Press the plunger down slowly and steadily until empty.
- •Keep the needle steady while injecting.
- •Pull the needle out at the same angle it was inserted.

After Care
- •Apply a cotton ball or gauze if there is slight bleeding.
- •Dispose of the needle immediately in a sharps container.
- •Never recap or reuse needles.
- •Store remaining medication properly (refrigerate if required).
- •Wash your hands once finished.
