Subcutaneous Self-Injection Guide

Self-administering a subcutaneous (under the skin) injection may feel intimidating at first, but with the right preparation and technique, it’s simple and safe. This step-by-step guide will walk you through everything you need — from preparing your supplies to proper injection technique and safe disposal.

Supplies You’ll Need

  • Medication vial or prefilled pen (as prescribed)
  • Syringe and needle
  • Alcohol prep pads
  • Cotton ball or gauze
  • Sharps disposal container

Step 1 – Prepare for Your Injection

  1. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water.
  2. Gather all supplies and place them on a clean surface.
  3. Check the medication label and expiration date.
  4. If using a vial, clean the rubber stopper with an alcohol pad.
  5. Draw the prescribed dose into the syringe, making sure to remove any air bubbles.

Step 2 – Choose and Clean the Injection Site

  • Common injection sites:
    • Abdomen (at least 2 inches away from the belly button)
    • Front of the thigh
    • Back of the upper arm (if someone else is assisting)
  • Rotate sites to avoid irritation.
  • Clean the chosen site with an alcohol pad and allow it to dry.

Step 3 – Administer the Injection

  1. Pinch the skin gently to create a small fold.
  2. Insert the needle at a 45°–90° angle (depending on needle length and provider instructions).
  3. Slowly push down the plunger to inject the medication.
  4. Remove the needle at the same angle it entered.
  5. Place a cotton ball or gauze over the site if needed.

Step 4 – After the Injection

  • Dispose of the syringe and needle immediately in a sharps container.
  • Never reuse syringes or needles.
  • Store your medication according to the instructions on the label.
